Methodology

We were able to access lyrics to songs by the Kidz Bop Kidz and the original version of the songs using Genius’s API. Some manual matching was involved to ensure that we chose the correct lyrics if there were multiple songs of the same name. The release year of both versions of each song was collected using Spotify’s API. Again, some manual matching was necessary.

To assess censorship, we first came up with a list of “bad words” and added to it by looking for words that commonly appeared in original songs but not in their Kidz Bop versions. Using regular expressions we tallied how many of each bad word occurred in the original and Kidz Bop versions. To determine censorship trends over time we looked at all of the original songs that had instances of our bad words and calculated what proportion of bad word/original song pairs were removed in the corresponding Kidz Bop versions. Each bad word counts once per song even if it occurs multiple times in the song.

We manually screened a subset of songs for missing and/or unreliable lyrics on Genius, but there could be some lingering artefacts. We also removed some Kidz Bop songs that were on more specialty albums (e.g. holiday albums) from our analysis. Raw data can be found here. Lyrics with particularly offensive words like the n-word and the r-word have been removed from this piece.

Just how does

censor songs?

Kidz Bop songs exist in a weird parallel universe, one where Lizzo’s famous line “I just took a DNA test, turns out I'm 100% that bitch” turns into “I just took a DNA test, turns out I'm 100% that kid.”

Sure, you expect profanity to be censored, but some of the swaps are giggle-inducing gems and travesties. So, we wanted to see if we could find patterns in the black-barred words — R.I.P. to our Spotify account algorithms. (See the “bad word” methodology).

Kids, earmuffs! Did you even really try?

It’s tough to know what “bad words” Kidz Bop will censor and when — censorship has gotten considerably more strict over the 19 years of albums. “Champagne” was censored in the 2019 Kidz Bop version of Ed Sheeran and Khalid’s “Beautiful People,” but it was left in for the 2001 adaptation of Ricky Martin’s “Livin’ La Vida Loca” (along with “addiction” and a “bullet to the brain”).

In songs with “bad words,” those “bad words” were censored 6.3 times more in Kidz Bop’s last 5 years of songs compared to the first 5 years.

To see what’s driving that increase, we categorized the words: alcohol & drugs, sexual references, profanity, violence, identity, and other.

Less censorship

More censorship

It does come down to the usual culprits: alcohol & drugs, sexual references, and profanity. But, those types of words are definitely censored more now then they were in Kidz Bop’s early years.

And despite the increase in censorship, some experts still think Kidz Bop fails. A 2017 study argued that repackaging adult music doesn’t eliminate adult messages: Kidz Bop is teaching gender role conformity and race identification and pushing kids to grow up quicker, a sociological phenomena known as “kids getting older younger” (KGOY).

So, the censorship may not be that effective for kids, but it’s still fun for us to compare. Explore by category below.
